HEDGES IN TROUGHS

You can buy hedges ready grown in troughs or hedgebags and these have several advantages. They look established from the beginning, planting is more straightforward and you can be sure that the plants are already at the correct spacing. They can be trimmed to your required height and they  are ready when you and the ground are ready. If the weather is not right for planting they can wait without loss of condition (as long as you look after them). There are several varieties capable of making evergreen hedges.

Amongst the varieties available in troughs and hedgebags are

Box, Hornbeam, Dogwood, Hawthorn, Escallonia, Green Beech, Purple Beech, Ilex crenata, Mixed Native, Mixed Beech, Privet, Yew, Lonicera nitida, Portuguese Laurel, Laurel,, Holm Oak, Western Red Cedar and Photinia

Some hedging is also available as "mock staggered units", with three plants per pot like a small section of a hedge, or as plants cut square to fit next to each other without wide gaps.

WHEN YOU BUY LARGE TREES AND LARGE PLANTS PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THEY MAY NEED PLANTING BY CONTRACTORS. IF YOU BUY MATURE TREES IN PARTICULAR THEY CAN EASILY BE ROCKED BY HIGH WINDS AND MAY NEED GROUND ANCHORS OR BRACING. IF YOU BUY LARGE TREES IN CONTAINERS BIGGER THAN AROUND 60 LITRES THEY MAY BE DIFFICULT TO HANDLE AND SUCH LARGE TREES MAY NEED MOVING AND PLANTING BY MACHINE.

WATERING MAY BE ESSENTIAL DURING THE FIRST TWO YEARS AT LEAST FOR LARGE TREES AND ESPECIALLY MATURE TREES. AFTER YOU BUY LARGE TREES, HEDGES OR EVERGREEN SCREENS THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRY OUT DURING THIS TIME.
